The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that all 11 Iranian military ships in the Gulf of Oman were destroyed in an operation against Iran. This was stated in a CENTCOM declaration posted on social media platform X.
"Two days ago, the Iranian regime had 11 ships in the Gulf of Oman, today they have zero," the statement said.
In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. IRGC commander advisor Ibrahim Jabari stated that the corps will strike any vessel attempting to pass through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key global energy trade route. According to Stanislav Lazovsky, a junior researcher at IMEMO RAS, it handles about 15% of global oil exports and 20% of liquefied natural gas supplies.
He noted that the impact on global markets could be significant if Tehran decides and is able to maintain a large-scale blockade of the strait.
