U.S. President Donald Trump told Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a phone call that he wants to achieve a peaceful settlement and end the active phase of the conflict in Ukraine within the next month. The American leader emphasized that the confrontation has dragged on too long and expressed Washington's readiness to provide Kyiv with substantial security guarantees as part of future agreements.
According to Axios, the dialogue between the leaders served as preparation for important diplomatic consultations in Geneva scheduled for February 26. The parties discussed in detail the agenda of the upcoming bilateral meeting of delegations and also addressed organizational issues for full-format trilateral negotiations planned for early March.
Recall that in May 2024, during the height of his election campaign, Trump claimed he could end military actions in Ukraine in just 24 hours if he won the election. His plan was based on confidence in his personal authority and the possibility of reaching an agreement through direct negotiations with the leaders of both countries, based on mutual respect. However, this promise was not fulfilled in practice.
Over time, the timelines began to change: first, the rhetoric shifted to a 100-day plan to launch a peace process after inauguration. Later, on July 29, the tone became even harsher—Trump issued an ultimatum, giving Russia just 10 days to conclude a ceasefire agreement, threatening 100% tariffs for countries buying Russian oil in case of refusal.
